Dominican Republic

What started as a last-minute birthday trip, booked on a Thursday and flown out by Saturday, turned into a fun and much-needed getaway. After days of indecision, I finally just went for it and brought my sister and nephew along for the adventure. We spent four relaxing days at an all-inclusive resort that checked every box: double gate security, great food, endless activities, and top-tier service. The resort staff made us feel like family from the moment we arrived. I’ll talk more about the resort in a later paragraph. But the highlight wasn’t just the resort life. We also stepped beyond the gates for a Monkeyland tour and a Dominican culture experience, which gave us a deeper appreciation for the people, traditions, and daily life beyond the beaches.

📍 Places I Visited
  • Transport: Private Transfers Between Punta Cana Airport and Hotels (Viator Link)
  • Monkeyland: A unique chance to interact with friendly squirrel monkeys in a natural setting (Viator Link).
  • Dominican Republic Cultural Tour (Viator Link)
    • Salvaleón de Higüey: A bustling town offering a glimpse into everyday Dominican life.
    • Basilica Nuestra Señora De La Altagracia: A stunning architectural and spiritual landmark.
    • Dominican Market: Explored local goods, souvenirs, and the lively atmosphere of a traditional market.
    • Salto de Anamuya: A peaceful natural spot with beautiful views and fresh mountain air.
    • Tour of a Dominican Home: Learned about how locals live day to day.
    • Traditional Dominican Lunch: Enjoyed a home-cooked meal with authentic flavors.
    • Rancho Real Cigars: Saw how the handmade cigars were crafted and even attempted to roll one myself.
    • Playa Macao Beach: Wrapped up the cultural tour with beautiful ocean views.
🏨 Where I Stayed
  • Dreams Flora Resort & Spa: 5/5 ⭐️
    • The room was incredibly spacious, with a comfortable king-size bed plus a pull-out couch that worked perfectly for my nephew. The bathroom was just as roomy, and the fridge came well-stocked with water, Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, and club soda.

This was my first time staying at an all-inclusive resort, so I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but it turned out to be so much more than I could have ever imagined. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by our concierge who helped us book excursions, secure dinner reservations, and even texted me the resort itinerary each morning. It felt like everything was taken care of, which made it so easy to just relax and enjoy.

There were activities for everyone, whether it was Zumba on the beach, kids making play dough, or just lounging by one of the many pools (each one had a swim-up bar, which was a big plus). I loved the coffee shops on the property too, they became my go-to for late-night coffee runs and quick grab-and-go snacks when we were on the move. At night, the staff always gathered to dance, and even if you had two left feet, they made it so fun to jump in and join.

The food was another highlight. The resort had a buffet, Japanese, Mexican, and French restaurants. We didn’t get to try them all, but the buffet and Japanese spots were both excellent. The buffet especially stood out because there were so many options, even the pickiest eater wouldn’t go hungry.

For New Year’s Eve, the buffet closed early so the staff could prepare a five-star feast. From crab legs and sushi to steak, cheese platters, and just about anything you could imagine, the spread was incredible. And the desserts? Absolute heaven for anyone with a sweet tooth. The staff even created a champagne tree so everyone could have a glass before midnight. Since I don’t drink, we simply headed to the bar and ordered a fun non-alcoholic cocktail to toast the new year. The night was filled with music, dancing, and so much joy. To make the evening even more special, it also happened to be my birthday. To my surprise, the staff all came together to sing me Happy Birthday. It was such a sweet and unexpected gesture, and it really showed just how much they go above and beyond to make you feel at home. By the end of our stay, we found ourselves going around to say goodbye to everyone we had met, which made leaving that much harder. I left with the warmest memories and can’t wait for the day I get to go back.

📝 Travel Tips
  • eSIM: Airalo — I’ve used this in nearly every country I’ve traveled to, and it’s worked great. Be sure to set it up before your trip begins.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen: Protect both your skin and the coral reefs, especially if you plan to snorkel.
  • Bring small bills and cash: Tipping is customary, and small denominations make it easier for taxis, vendors, and resort staff.
  • Stay hydrated: The Caribbean sun is strong, so carry water with you throughout the day.
  • Bug spray is essential: Mosquitoes are common, especially in the evenings or near lush areas.
  • Comfortable sandals or water shoes: Beaches are beautiful, but some areas have rocky patches or coral.
  • Bring a hat and sunglasses: You’ll want extra shade while enjoying the sun.
  • Stick to bottled water: It’s safer than tap water, especially if you’re prone to sensitive stomachs.
  • Relax and enjoy the island vibes: The Dominican Republic is all about sun, sand, and slowing down.
